District Six Museum — Forced Goodbyes
There’s a stair in the museum with my grandfather’s surname etched onto it.
the thought:
More than 60,000 people were forced from their homes in District Six, many leaving with little more than a single suitcase.
To make that history feel personal again, we recreated those suitcases using the real stories and belongings of the people who packed them. Turning a number that’s almost impossible to comprehend into individual goodbyes you could actually see.
